01

Facility Assessment & Containment

Water treatment facilities require careful planning before any blasting begins. We assess tank conditions, identify coating failure modes, and set up containment to capture blast media and debris. Environmental controls are in place before the first nozzle fires. OSHA-compliant confined space procedures are followed for all interior tank work.

  • Tank condition assessed: rust grade, coating adhesion, and failure areas identified
  • Containment set up for both interior and exterior surfaces
  • OSHA confined space procedures followed for interior work
  • Environmental controls in place throughout the project

02

Abrasive Blast to Bare Metal

Interior and exterior tank surfaces are blasted to the specified SSPC standard. Old coatings, rust, and contamination are fully removed. For potable water tanks, surface cleanliness is critical: any contamination left behind can compromise the new coating system and the water supply. We do not cut corners on prep.

  • Interior and exterior surfaces blasted to SSPC standard
  • All rust, old coatings, and contamination removed
  • Proper anchor profile created for coating adhesion
  • Seams, welds, and hard-to-reach areas fully addressed

03

NSF-Compliant Coating System Applied

With surfaces properly prepped, we apply the NSF-compliant coating system specified for the project. NSF/ANSI 61 certification means the coating is approved for contact with potable water. Full film thickness is verified throughout. Interior and exterior surfaces are coated to protect against corrosion, chemical exposure, and the demands of continuous water contact.

  • NSF/ANSI 61 compliant coating system applied
  • Full film thickness verified throughout
  • Interior surfaces coated for potable water contact
  • Exterior surfaces coated for corrosion and weather resistance

Final Inspection & Cure Verification

Before the facility returns to service, we conduct a final inspection to verify coating coverage, film thickness, and cure. Holiday testing is performed on interior surfaces to identify any pinholes or voids. The facility does not go back online until the coating system passes inspection. That is the standard we hold ourselves to on every water treatment project.

  • Holiday testing performed on interior surfaces
  • Film thickness verified across all coated areas
  • Full coverage inspection before return to service
  • Documentation provided for facility records

Common Questions

Water Treatment FAQ

What is NSF/ANSI 61 coating and why does it matter for water treatment tanks?

NSF/ANSI 61 is the certification standard for products that contact drinking water. A coating applied to the interior of a potable water tank must be NSF/ANSI 61 certified to ensure it does not leach harmful substances into the water supply. Quad Cities Blasting & Industrial Coatings Group applies NSF-compliant coating systems on all potable water tank projects.

Do you handle confined space blasting inside water tanks?

Yes. Our crew is trained and equipped for OSHA-compliant confined space entry. We follow all permit-required confined space procedures for interior tank blasting and coating work, including atmospheric monitoring, ventilation, and rescue standby.

What surface prep standard do you use for water treatment tanks?

We follow SSPC surface preparation standards for all water treatment tank work. The specific standard depends on the coating system specified, typically SSPC SP-10 near-white metal blast for high-performance coating systems on potable water tanks.

Do you provide water treatment blasting and coating services across Iowa and Illinois?

Yes. We provide mobile water treatment tank blasting and coating services across the Quad Cities and surrounding region including Davenport IA, Bettendorf IA, Le Claire IA, Eldridge IA, Muscatine IA, Moline IL, Rock Island IL, East Moline IL, Silvis IL, Milan IL, and beyond.
