Abrasive Blasting, Steel Structure
Full surface prep on structural steel to SSPC SP-10 near-white metal standard. Every beam, connection, and weld addressed before protective coatings go on.

The Scope of Work
How We Work
The Process
01
Site Assessment & Containment Setup
Before the first blast nozzle hits steel, we assess the structure, identify contamination levels, and set up containment to control media and debris. Our mobile rig brings everything needed to the job site. No hauling, no downtime waiting on a shop. We work around your schedule and your facility.
- Full mobile service: equipment comes to you
- Containment set up to control blast media and debris
- Structure assessed for rust grade and contamination level
- OSHA-compliant job site setup from day one
02
Abrasive Blast to SSPC SP-10
We blast every inch of structural steel to SSPC SP-10 near-white metal standard. That means rust, mill scale, old coatings, and surface contaminants are removed from at least 95% of each unit area. Beams, connections, welds, and hard-to-reach areas all get the same treatment. No shortcuts, no skipped sections.
- SSPC SP-10 near-white metal blast achieved throughout
- All rust, mill scale, and old coatings removed
- Beams, connections, welds, and edges all addressed
- Proper anchor profile created for coating bond strength
03
Protective Coating System Applied
With the steel properly prepped and profiled, we apply the specified protective coating system before surface oxidation can begin. Timing matters: a properly prepped surface left exposed starts to flash rust quickly. We coordinate the blast and coat sequence to protect your investment and ensure the coating bonds to a clean, properly prepared substrate.
- Coating applied immediately after blast to prevent flash rust
- Full coverage on all structural members and connections
- Coating system matched to service environment and exposure
- Final inspection confirms coverage and film thickness
Common Questions
Abrasive Blasting FAQ
What is SSPC SP-10 near-white metal blast?
SSPC SP-10 is a surface preparation standard requiring that at least 95% of each unit area of steel be free of all visible residues including rust, mill scale, and old coatings. It is the second-highest blast standard and is required before applying high-performance protective coatings on structural steel.
Do you provide mobile abrasive blasting for structural steel in the Quad Cities?
Yes. Quad Cities Blasting & Industrial Coatings Group provides fully mobile abrasive blasting services. Our rig comes to your job site across Davenport IA, Moline IL, Rock Island IL, Bettendorf IA, East Moline IL, Silvis IL, Le Claire IA, Eldridge IA, and surrounding areas. No hauling required.
What types of structural steel do you blast?
We blast all types of structural steel including beams, columns, trusses, bridges, tanks, silos, industrial frames, and fabricated steel components. We address all surfaces including welds, connections, and hard-to-reach areas.
How soon after blasting should protective coating be applied?
Protective coating should be applied as soon as possible after blasting, ideally within the same work shift, to prevent flash rust from forming on the freshly blasted surface. Our crew coordinates blasting and coating application to minimize the window between prep and coating.
